For Spring Break this year my whole family took a trip to Cancun, Mexico for my mom's 50th birthday. We stayed in the cutest casa on the beach in Akumal, Mexico. Our first couple hours in Mexico we were all very tired and hangry from our travels and were immediately on a mission to find tacos. My brother Ryan brought us to this authentic place off the beaten path. We walked in and everyone was staring at us. They were confused as to why such a large group of gringos left their resort lol. We had a huge feast of chips, guac, ceviche, Mexican Coke, and tacos. It was amazing, I loved practicing my Spanglish with the waiter.
When we arrived at the house, I was in fell in love with its authentic Mexcian charm. I felt like I was in a tropical paradise. Chris and I got to stay in this charming little guest house. It was fun to have our own little escape. It felt like a second honeymoon.
My mom decided to get a chef to cook us breakfast and dinner for the week. Chef Emilio treated us to very authentic food. My favorite thing he made was chorizo eggs, he made them every day just for me. At every meal, he would make a special drink. We also tried so many different types of fruits. Emilio made dinner very exciting and delicious.
We were very busy all week with so many activities. On Monday we hit the ground running with snorkeling, a visit to the ruins in Tulum and a swim in a cenote. My favorite part of that excursion was the swim in the cenote. It was so cool swimming in this dark cave with stalagtights hanging from the ceiling. On Tuesday we relaxed at home, Chris and I went out to explore the beach around us. We went to find the sea turtles in Akumal bay but the government put a ban on swimming to the turtles. That was a bummer because we walked 2 miles to see them. After our adventure, we went into Playa Del Carmen to find some tacos, Al Pastor. After driving all over we finally heard from a local the place to go. When we got there I was shocked by the price of the tacos. They were only 15 pesos, that was like 75 cents in USD. They were the best tacos Al Pastor I've ever had. On Wednesday we had a full day of snorkeling, riding ATVs and wave runners. I was so sunburnt by the end of the day I couldn't hardly move. On Thursday we went to Xplor, a theme park made in a cenote. There were so many things to do. You could drive these ATVs on a trail through waterfalls and caves. They also had swimming and kayaking in cenotes. I think everyone's favorite part was the zip lining. Another great part of the park was the unlimited food. You could get as many fresh fruit drinks and oatmeal cookies as you wanted. They also had the best lunch with the best skirt steak. By the end of the day we were so tired we all found our way to the hammocks and passed out. It was fun exploring the park with Chris, my siblings, and my mom. On Friday we headed to another park called Xelha. It was a whole park devoted to snorkeling. It was so cool, they had this whole bay filled with fish and zip lines. It was a beautiful place.
Saturday morning was our last couple of hours left in paradise. Chris and I woke up early to watch the sunrise. We tried to soak up as much sun as we could before we headed back to snowy New York.It was bittersweet to leave but Cancun was an adventure I won't forget. I hope to go back very soon!
